To create acoustic-sounding realistic drums and round out your mix, pan them by kit position.

Drum Kit Labelled

This is the drummer's POV. Assuming your track has a hi-hat, kick, and snare, you would pan them to the hard left, slight left and centre respectively.

I prefer to flip to the audience's POV – just invert whatever the drummer sees. Hi-hat, kick, and snare would go to the hard right, slight right and centre respectively.

Also apply drummer logic – you have 2 hands and 2 feet. Your feet are occupied by either a double kick or kick and hi-hat; that means you only have 2 hands to hit, say, a snare and crash cymbal with.

Working with the default Logic drummer and MIDI VSTs like Steven Slate are perfectly alright, but using one-shots and arranging by hand has made my arrangements more realistic and nuanced.

Arranging well will also save you time later in mixing.
